…Because even our museums are the best places to party

New York is famous for its host of museums, which rival any cultural capital in the entire world. The city is also, well, infamous for its parties, which are equal parts glamorous and gritty, producing an atmosphere unlike any other. What many people don’t know though, is that more than a couple of New York’s best museums flawlessly combine these two arenas, producing parties and events to rival even the most ribald club experience. To us, that combination is uniquely New York, which is why we’ve decided to highlight three world class museums that are also throwing world class parties. Read up, and then get out there.

“Hell, Yes!” at the New Museum

Guests at the New Museum’s “Hell, Yes!” Members Party by Griffin Lipson/BFA

Sitting on the Bowery in a minimalist masterpiece of a building designed by architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA, the New Museum’s current location has been a welcome addition to New York’s contemporary art scene since it opened in 2007. And while the museum boasts attractively massive rooms, high ceilings, and unique views of the city, it’s not widely known that it also hosts great parties. But trust us, it does. This summer, the New Museum will host its annual members-only “Hell, Yes!” party in the building’s Sky Room terrace, featuring a live performance from Ambrosia Parsley. If you’d like to attend but aren’t yet a member, don’t worry, student memberships can be had for as little as $50, while an individual adult can get in for $70.

One Step Beyond at the American Museum of Natural History

A One Step Beyond Party by D. Finnin for the AMNH

Founded way back in 1869, the American Museum of Natural History is the big daddy of them all, living in every American’s collective consciousness through appearances in books and film. And while many people only associate it with, well, history, the AMNH is alive and thriving, even hosting incredible parties, like its One Step Beyond events, which take place in its visually-stunning Rose Center for Earth and Space. Past One Step Beyond events have featured amazing electronic bands like Neon Indian, alongside sought-after DJs like Arthur Baker. This June’s One Step Beyond is sure to live up to that history, hosting  DJ Camilo, Riomba, and DJ BETO, along with plenty of beer and wine to fuel the dance floor.
