Will Virtual Reality Change Dating & Sex?

Just 20 years ago, people relied on brick and mortar libraries as their primary means for research and garnering information. However, with immense advances in the internet, and the ubiquity of smartphones, almost everyone has a mini-computer in their pockets. The widespread access to content and information has never been easier. Sex and dating are being transformed too. Online dating is no longer weird or different, and the once-futuristic concept of Enhanced or Virtual Reality (VR) is quickly altering the sensual act of making love. Our O.N.S team in Japan recently spoke with a young, tech-savvy individual fascinated with the sexual possibilities of VR. This is not a story from a dystopian, distant future. It’s 2017 people, and the future is now.

Can you briefly tell us about yourself?

My name is Jun Wakabayashi.  I’m 26-years-old, and I’m in charge of app marketing at Yahoo! Japan. I also direct an online TV program “Yahu Yahu Broadcasting” at Nico Nico Namahousou (a popular Japanese site for live broadcast streams). I have always been a big fan of manga, videogames and new technologies.

What attracted you to the world of VR?

I experienced VR with a Head Mounted Display for the first time in 2014. It was a Trend Coaster, a virtual roller coaster that Yahoo! Japan made with Oculus Rift. After that, I experienced PlayStation VR (PSVR) at an event called “Game on, why is video games fun?” I played “The Deep” game in which virtual sharks were attacking me, and it was a very scary experience. At that point, I thought VR was going to change the world.

What intrigues you the most about VR?

The awareness and proximity detection is quite amazing. It feels like the objects exist right in front of you. For me, this is the most important feature of VR. And also, there is a liberating sense of freedom when you’re playing VR Games. For example, in “Grand Theft Auto” you can drive your car through town and interact freely with several different people.

“You can choose the girl’s hair style, boob size, thickness of lips and even sleep with her.”

Are there any dating simulation games for VR?

I’m not sure if we can call this a dating game, but I’ve played Summer Lesson on PSVR. It’s about being a private tutor for a high school girl. Sexy VR games for smartphones are really exploding, and even porn sites like “Pornhub” have a category for VR. The highest quality VR can be played with computers like Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE. You’ll have to shell out about $2,000 for the computer and Head Mounted Display, but the quality is very good. You’ll find sexier games on computers than in PSVR. You can choose the girl’s hair style, boob size, thickness of lips and even sleep with her.

What do you think of these dating VR games?

After I first tried PSVR, I thought that if sexual games came out for women, they would be instantly popular. There is a category of video games called “Otome Game” (Girl’s Game) in Japan. In the games, girls can date extremely good-looking guys. It’s been said that the beautiful illustrations and enticing voices of these games can get a girl’s ear pregnant. If there are VR games in which girls can date good-looking guys/celebrities, it would really take off. Of course, guys also can get excited by VR because of proximity detection, but men have to reach orgasm so they need something physical, like extra gadgets, working simultaneously.

How do you think VR will generally affect love and sex?

I think people will inevitably get lazier with real world relationships and dating, and less people would want to date in real life. Actually, the younger generation already thinks this way, so VR will only accelerate this situation.

What do you think is the future for VR?

There are some problems of cost for making contents and platform, but I’m pretty optimistic. VR is going to be popular for sure. Humans never give up on fun stuff, and we will adapt seamlessly to VR. Some say in 10 years, VR will be as common as smartphones are right now. According to an estimate, the VR market will become a 12 billion dollar industry, and it will be used in video games, events, real estate, education and the healthcare industry. VR Machines are getting smaller, quality is getting better and prices are getting cheaper. New mediums and technologies always reflect humanity’s evolving nature, characteristics they never even knew existed. As VR develops, I am excited to discover new aspects of humans we didn’t even know we had.
