Snapshots: What You Need To Know In 2017

The first quarter of every new year is fueled by the thrill of the unexpected. Who’s going to release a surprise album? What’s the next blockbuster? Has the iPhone peaked? There’s a lot that’s too early to call, but we can’t help but ask what’s next? We’ve laid out a few 2017 predictions and rounded up some of the cutting-edge trends that we’re most excited to see.

Dynamic Duo? Chance x Childish Gambino Mixtape

Chance-Childish

Way back in 2014, Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) announced a mixtape. Sadly, it never saw the light of day.  Since then, both have dropped several projects that have elevated their careers, leaving many wondering if we’ll ever hear a single second of the collaborative record. There may still be hope. At the top of the year, Chance uploaded a photo of the duo working together fueling more rumors and speculation surrounding new music.  Although frustrating because of the limited details, it’s something to keep an eye on. With creative minds like that, who knows what they’re cooking up?

Rei Kawakubo at The Met

Rei

This is only the second time the Costume Institute has honored a living designer (Yves Saint Laurent being the first). This year’s show will follow Kawakubo’s work at super avant-garde label Comme des Garcons. Although the brand itself shrouds itself in mystery and is unrepentantly aloof, it’s been an obsession within pop culture for several decades. Even if you don’t completely “get” the designs on the runway, we all know and love the brands signature heart-emblazoned attire. As always, you can expect tons of hoopla for the exhibit’s kick-off, but be sure to check it out in person this spring.

May 4th – Sept. 4th, The Met Fifth Avenue

Custom Soles: 3D Printed Footwear

adidasfuturecraftlede

It’s safe to say that we are in the infantile stages of 3D printed footwear. Experts in this field are comparing the techniques and aesthetics of initial designs to the brick cellphone of the past; it’s absolutely incredible how far we’ve progressed. Like any piece of innovation, we have to start somewhere, and with new releases from the likes of Nike, Adidas, and New Balance, there is a lot to look forward to. Imagine the possibilities of walking into your local Footlocker and leaving with a shoe tailored perfectly to you.

A Bit of Advice: How To Talk To Girls At Parties

How To Talk Girls At Parties

Nostalgia, aliens, and Nicole Kidman, what else can you ask for? How To Talk To Girls At Parties is a film based on Neil Gaiman’s short story which was nominated for the Hugo Award. It follows a youngAND introverted punk rocker guy who sneaks into an underground party where he meets a group of otherworldly girls. Turns out they’re aliens. We’ve all had that phase before right? Young, awkward, and confused – you against the entire world. The film itself is in good hands, being directed by Cameron Mitchell and the lead being played by Elle Fanning. Give the short story a read when you get the chance, then keep an eye out for the film.

Grooming Advancements: Kiehls Micro Peel Concentrate

Time to upgrade your daily skin routine — if you have one. It’s no secret the grooming industry has been growing at rapid speed within the past few years, especially within the menswear industry. But for men who have no routine, this could especially work for you. Kiehls has released a serum concentrate that helps refine the feel of rough skin and visibly even out skin tone. If you’ve done any research in this area, you know it costs a pretty penny for a procedure like this to be professionally done. This could be the start of something great.

Next Blockbuster? Song To Song

So how did you feel about Ryan Gosling in LaLa Land? Chances are you loved it like the rest of the world. If that’s the case, the good news is he’s set to be a leading role in celebrated director Terrence Malick’s new film Song To Song alongside Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, and Rooney Mara. The film has been in the making for sometime, with scenes going back as far as the 2012 SXSW festival. Originally titled Weightless, little is known about the film other than the story follows two struggling songwriters while two others play music moguls.

Lorde’s Sophomore Outing

Full disclosure, we love Lorde. She’s battled questions about the follow-up to her monumental debut album in 2013 since, well, 2013. This past November, for her 20th birthday, she gave a bit of insight into her sophomore project, explaining that Pure Heroine was all about “enshrining our teenage glory” and this project is all about what’s next in her post-teenage life. Although the new album has been nothing but mystery, she hasn’t completely stepped out of music. She co-wrote Broods’ “Heartlines,” featured on a Disclosure track, and sang numerous award show tributes. At press time, she’d just released her first single from the sophomore album, “Green Light,” and we think it’s a harbinger of great things to come.

Adult Social Media? Try Vero.

LIFESTYLE_POST_MUSIC01

Most social media platforms are now a stomping ground for over-sharing, over-excited, over-eager teenagers. But lately, we’ve been seeing social media platforms popping up that steer more towards the adult crowd. Vero is the one we’d suggest trying out. It allows you to curate and control your feed, and choose who sees what. So there’s less danger of running into the problem of over-sharing. This curating feature gives you the ability to discuss topics like music, film, or restaurant recommendations with a select group who might actually be interested.
