How-To: Mastering The Shirt Jacket
It’s official! The shirt jacket (sometimes called the “shacket”) has arrived as a key menswear staple. The vital word to mention when discussing shirt jackets is “versatility.” Simply put, when the temperature starts to dip, it’s a very handy garment for layering and staying warm. You can throw a shirt jacket over a luxe cashmere sweater or layer one under a sturdy wool topcoat for extra protection against the elements. To illustrate a few different looks, we asked NYC menswear influencer, Christian Blanchet to style three of our bestselling shirt jackets from the current FW15 season.
The Urban Outdoorsman:
The look below features our Herringbone shirt jacket, the Slub texture plaid shirt and our Skinny fit denim. In an alternate setting, these clothes could have been worn by a strapping lumberjack, but notice how the sleek fit and concise proportions make this outfit perfect for an afternoon Tribeca stroll. Pay attention and take notes.
Modern-Day James Dean:
There are certain ironclad rules in menswear everyone must know. One of them is this: No mortal man can rock a lightweight jacket and look as cool as 50’s Hollywood icon, James Dean. With that said, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t at least try. Our second look features the Onassis coated shirt jacket layered over our cozy brushed twill plaid shirt. There is also an added functionality factor here with the shirt jacket having a waxed, water-repellant coating.
Autumn Neutrals:
We did a style feature earlier this fall about green being the “it” color of the season. It’s also an easy neutral autumn hue that works perfectly for a shirt jacket. For the next look, our unlined fused shirt jacket is deftly matched with the plaid heather flannel shirt for an elegant, laidback presentation. Quick tip about layering: make sure the individual items can stand well on their own, and most likely, the finished ensemble will come off nicely too.
