A Day In The Life: Photographer & filmmaker, Andy To

Andy To’s story is just as much a tale about overcoming adversity as it is about the power of creative discovery. Hailing from East Oakland, California, he grew up in a rough neighborhood that exposed him to violence, drugs and gangs. Even though he was surrounded by all types of negativity, he was able to find a way out through the kindness of others, and discovering the expansive universe of filmmaking and photography. Today, Andy is a highly sought-after social media influencer, videographer and photographer, and his impressive career continues to soar to new heights. He has traveled extensively all over the world (South Africa, Peru, Bolivia, Thailand, India, etc), and worked with a plethora of major global brands (Sony, LG, Herschel Supply Co., Jaguar, etc). We tagged along with Andy as he made his rounds on a brisk NYC fall day, and we also threw a couple of questions his way. Read on below:

First off, how long have you lived in NYC?

I’ve been living in NYC for 9 months now. I’m originally from Oakland, California and my family is from Vietnam.

How would you describe your creative process?

I got into photography at Fremont high school. It all started with a drama class I was enrolled in where our weekly assignments were to create videos.

What inspires you?

Being in the outdoors inspires me. When I was in grade school I tried to explore and be outside with my friends every opportunity I had.

How would you describe your fall style?

My fall style consists of warmer tones. One of my favorite colors is terra-cotta and red.

What does minimalism mean to you?

Minimalism is everything to me. Growing up around clutter in the household taught me how to organize and simplify my life.

What are you favorite NYC spots to relax, eat, have fun, meet friends, etc.?

The basketball courts at Brooklyn Bridge Parkthat’s where I made a lot of my friends and there’s a beautiful view of the skyline

Any big projects coming up that you can share with us?

I’m currently working on a relief/recovery video for Sony in Puerto Rico and planning a talk with Apple soon.

You recently opened a group exhibition at your Brooklyn studio—what inspired you to host the show?

I create because when I’m out shooting, I feel free. Nothing to worry about, being present in the moment and capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

What’s your favorite travel destination?

My favorite travel destination has to be Vietnam. It’s the motherland.

What songs will we find on your fall soundtrack?

You’ll hear a lot of music without lyrics. Everything from classical to jazz. The coffee shop playlists on Spotify are some of my favorites.

What would you consider as your biggest accomplishment to date in your artistic career?

One of my biggest accomplishments was being the first in my family to graduate college and leave Oakland. Then coming back to implement changes in the community.
