How to Master Nonchalant Style

Believe it or not, there’s an art to looking like you don’t care. We know you’ve seen it. The guy who’s wearing a simple denim shirt and trousers, (the shirt may be a little frayed) nothing special, but it looks good. How do they achieve it? Below we take a look at a few icons who had the look of nonchalance nailed and incorporate a few of their stylish characteristics into our own closets.
Muhammed Ali
The late, great Mr. Muhammed Ali. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Let’s take a moment to talk about the essential piece sweatshirts, starting with the name. Sweat. Shirt. Hardly an innovating or appealing name for a garment, yet it’s humble origins as an athletic garment has grown to be a key piece in every modern mans wardrobe. If you’re going to pull anything from Ali’s style opt for a sweatshirt – like our Malcolm – and team them with a pair of combat boots while you’re on the way to the gym. It’ll guarantee a few extra looks.
Robert Redford
The Western Denim Shirt
Perhaps the simplest fail-safe way to smarten up a pair of denim pants is a denim western shirt. It’s always going to look good, as proven by Mr. Robert Redford on several occasions. It’s worth noting that Mr. Redford’s style truly came alive while in character, whether playing the wrangler in any of his numerous old western roles, or sporting denim head-to-toe (with aviators of course) during his personal downtime. Just a few tips to add on to an already rugged look– try adding lighter hues and leather when completing the outfit.
James Dean
The T-shirt
We’re all familiar with Mr. James Dean. He pretty much invented teen rebellion and set the template for outsider style – slouchy, unassuming, and cool. His unfading look is the reason he’s a source for menswear inspiration nearly 60 years after his untimely death. Take a page right out Mr. Dean’s signature film Rebel Without a Cause and keep things simple – Cropped jacket, white T-shirt, and dark denim – for a look that embodies brooding masculinity.
Marlon Brando
The Camp Collar Shirt
If James Dean is the template, then Marlon Brando is the pioneer to nonchalant cool. While his most notable and arguably most influential style comes from his performance in The Wild One, we’re tapping into Mr. Brando’s off duty look. There’s a few things to learn when it comes to Brando’s casual style. The camp-collar shirt is a far airier alternative to the classic button-up, which can instantly give an outfit a retro nonchalance (are you seeing the theme yet?) if worn right. The takeaway here is to keep things simple, undo a few buttons and let the shirt do the talking.
