Bushwick Neighborhood Guide: Insider Picks from the O.N.S Staff
Along the busy train lines and bridges that connect the island of Manhattan to Brooklyn, there’s an area that isn’t your typical BK brownstone-lined neighborhood. Full of artists, students, and longtime locals—some love it, some hate it, but it’s here that three members of the O.N.S corporate team live, eat, drink, and even sleep on occasion. For the Explorer Issue, our trusty insiders compiled their favorite spots to hit when they’re not in the office.

The Space
No two products are the same. All of Mr. Poglia’s handsomely-rugged small leather goods, knives, and bags are designed in Bushwick and handmade in Brazil.

What to buy: If you have the money, definitely invest in a Poglia bag.
Why I love it: “Following Max Poglia for years and seeing how he transformed his Poglia brand, I was thoroughly excited to see what he would cook up with The Space. Accompanied by Alessandro Squarzi and Helio Ascari, The Space NYC is a creative collaboration and workshop created by the three like-minded individuals. I personally enjoy seeing the brands they showcase, such as Osklen and Old Joe. Also, the crew is starting a leather sneaker line called, For the Rovers. If you’re in the area on Saturdays, go and check out The Space NYC!
Tula House
The beautifully curated, sun-dappled greenhouse showroom is filled to the brim with plants and artisanal ceramics. Plus, it’s a great escape from the concrete jungle of New York.

What to buy: They’ll point you in the right direction to which plant works best for your home.
Why I love it: “Tula is the best to me because it’s locally owned, there’s thought to their selection, and only 3 stops away from me.”
Foster Sundry
Fancy wines, artisan cheese, butcher’s counter, and specialty grocer, right in the heart of Bushwick.

What to buy: If you are looking for something outstanding to eat in the morning, I would suggest the Egg and Cheese biscuit. Don’t forget to add the bacon though, it’s worth it!
Why I love it: “Foster Sundry is a little cute neighborhood gem that is easily accessible and has tons of unique and delicious goodies to choose from.”

Archie’s Bar & Pizza
The late night, by-the-slice neighborhood pizza joint, that also serves pasta, grinders, plus beer, wine & cocktails.

What to buy: Get the always classic pepperoni and cheese slice.
Why I love it: “Definitely a go-to late night spot, and the pizza is amazing. You know it’s been a fun night when you stumble into Archie’s at 3AM.”
Dobbin Street Vintage
Flushing Ave vintage store that specializes in larger furniture pieces with a chic boho vibe.

What to buy: The inventory is constantly changing, but they’ve got great deals everywhere.
Why I love it: “I’ve recently moved to Bushwick, so I keep an eye on Dobbin street for new pieces for my apartment.”
BK Jani
A cozy BYOB Pakistani kitchen best known for their amazing burgers (best in Bushwick), plus kebabs, lamb chops & vegan options.

What to buy: Do yourself a favor and just get the burger.
Why I love it: “Prime 3rd or 4th date spot. Nothing too over the top, but such a good hidden gem. The inside is cozy-casual and the food is flavorful and amazing. Bring a nice bottle of red wine and you’re set.”

AP Café
AP Cafe has high ceilings, natural light, and a beautiful ambiance. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee or latte.

What to buy: Try the mushroom toast and of course the coffee.
Why I love it: “On weekends and days off I love walking to AP to write, sketch, and just brainstorm. The music always puts me in the mood to work, and it has such a relaxed and creative atmosphere.”
Mad Tropical
A little more jazzed up than its predecessor, Tandem, Mad Tropical is the spot for big drinks, good eats, and of course, dancing.

What to buy: The food is great. They’ve got a decent beer selection, but the “Hey Rummy” is worth a try.
Why I love it: “What use to be a dance spot called Tandem just recently got replaced by Mad Tropical. They’ve got big shoes to fill, but with almost nightly dance parties and DJ features, they’re on the right track.”
Sally Roots
The thoughtfully conceived bar serving up Caribbean cuisine with a dash of American. Not to mention they’ve partnered with James Beard-nominated designer Matthew Maddy for a beautiful restaurant environment.

What to buy: Braised Oxtail with a side of grits for brunch.
Why I love it: “I frequent Sally Roots for brunch, especially in the summer. They’ve got a great outdoor area, plus bomb food and drinks”.
