What Makes A Street Style Photo Timeless?

When it comes to “fashion” and “style,” everyone tends to have their own interpretation of what makes these qualities classic. Whether it relates to a timeless piece of clothing, a timeless top and bottom pairing or even a timeless style icon; the perspective of timelessness is mostly subjective. This includes how street style photographers interpret the photos they’re most proud of as well. As we mused over this question, we asked three street style photographers what they thought of street style, and what makes a iconic street style photo to them.

“A street style image is iconic when you find a subject that is entirely in possession of their own style, it has to read like a story, fiction, biography, doesn’t matter as long as you cant put it down. The style has to radiate from soul to stitches, authenticity in a word.

There is a kaleidoscope of circumstances that need to align just right as well, the light must be perfect, the background must emphasize the subject, everything must seem as a natural extension of the subject, mirror, echo, juxtapose…”

“I think a timeless street style photo is one where the focus is on the subject’s personal style. It’s always fun to shoot someone wearing the latest trend or it item and it’s what people are expecting from street style, but at the end of the day these photos don’t age well.”

“I think what makes a street style image memorable is one that tells a story. I’m always looking for someone who exudes confidence, and walks down the street like nobody is watching. I also think capturing the environment is also important — it conveys the state of the city at the time, which is always so interesting to look back on in the future.”
