Cocktail Corner: The Negroni

Onassis_Negroni

There are a handful of cocktails that are always going to impress acquaintances and casual observers, no matter the situation. The Negroni is one of those esteemed cocktails. Whether you’re on a first date, having a power dinner with your boss or enjoying happy hour in a swanky lounge, a Negroni is always a classy and sophisticated choice.

The Negroni’s origins date all the way back to Europe in the early 20th Century. The story goes that Count Camillo Negroni was dining at Bar Casoni in Florence when he ordered an Americano (sweet vermouth, Campari and club soda). But he had a stroke of genius and opted for gin instead of the traditional club soda.

What sets the Negroni apart from all other cocktails is its distinct flavor profile. It boasts a unique trio of gin, vermouth and Campari and the result is a bitter-sweet finish that’s certainly an acquired taste. The cocktail’s masterful finishing touch is an orange peel garnish, and this adds yet another layer of citrus-y goodness to the drink.

Perfect for summer, fall or the coldest winter day, we should all tip our hats to Count Camillo for his delectable creation.

Ingredients:

1 part gin

1 part vermouth

1 part Campari

(Best enjoyed in a double rocks glass with large ice cubes)
