The Genre Bending Nomad: Oli Chang

ONS_OliChang-3128

The first thing you notice when meeting Oli Chang is his incredibly warm and laid-back demeanor. Originally from Sydney, the now NY-based artist is a certified pro at making music you want to groove to. Oli’s known for “Loveless Nights”– the Brooklyn party that’s notorious for its diverse atmosphere. He’s now working on his new musical experiment ANIMAL FEELINGS, which features an electronic-inspired sound that’s sure to set off a few late night parties. The first single from the project “Fire,” combines a unique pop-infused techno beat that delivers indie-dance pop bliss. We got the chance to pick Oli’s brain, and discuss his sense of style, music and how he balances his crazy work life with his down time.

You’re a busy man, Oli – how many musical projects/bands are you currently involved in?

I have two main projects Animal Feelings and High Highs.

What would you say is the main difference between your projects: High Highs and Animal Feelings?

High Highs is dreamy indie pop and Animal Feelings is more of a stream-of-consciousness electronic music project.

You’re originally from Australia and have lived in NYC for many years – what do you love most about NYC and what do you miss the most about Sydney?

I love and hate the density of NYC. You can have anything you want 10 minutes from your doorstep but then people are also shouting about outside your door. Sydney has a lonely magic to it. The wild life is so abundant – especially the birds. It’s probably the most lifestyle-plus city in the world.

How would you describe your fashion style – What are some of your perennial wardrobe staples?

I love and hate the Acne black wave. I find its simplicity operational but miss experimenting with colors. I’m getting more into fun blues and whites to freshen things up a bit.

What does your usual weekday routine consist of in NYC?

I spend a lot of time at my piano. I’m working on new music for a second Animal Feelings record (the first one will be out soon). I’m really getting into using the piano as a sound source for organic sounding electronic music.

What about your weekends?

I like writing music during the day and cocktail/dinner parties at night with friends who are into mutual inspiration. NY is fun for that!

What are your upcoming tour dates and do you have any recent bizarre/crazy tour experiences you could share with us?

The funniest recent thing was having a popcorn monopoly party in animal print bathrobes in San Fran. Come see us at Rough Trade on April 9 in Brooklyn! (High Highs not Animal Feelings)

Lastly, what advice would you give to musicians starting out in NYC about not giving up on their dreams?

I would say look deeply into what makes you truly unique and work everyday on making that music. Always release and perform your work whether you love or hate it. Don’t copy your idols or peers. Do something new!
