Who is Dale Moss?

You may have heard of Dale Moss before. After all, the model and entrepreneur also made it to the NFL after playing only one year of college football. But for Dale, that tenacity, drive, and talent extends far beyond the football field. And it shows, not only in the charitable work he’s done with the likes of the Special Olympics, but also in the brands he’s worked with, which include the likes of Cadillac and United Airlines. Now, he’s set his sights on working as a director and producer, using film to feature and elevate people that the mainstream often leaves behind. And of course, with all that, he still maintains a strict fitness regime. O.N.S recently met up with Mr. Moss in Madison Square Park to talk about how sport helped him build his thriving new career. And we even got some workout tips along the way.

From modeling to supporting the Special Olympics to making films, you do a wide variety of things, all with the mission of helping others or highlighting stories that aren’t always told by the mainstream. When did you know that you could use these connections and skills to help lift other people up?

I’ve always had a gift of connecting with people on a deep level. I believe it came from how well our family communicated and how open we were with one another. Having a selfless and open upbringing really allowed me to genuinely show empathy for other people. Also as I’ve gone through my career I’ve had transitions and have always had help along the way. Nobody does it alone and also I’m not afraid to say what I truly believe and also really have found joy in sharing other peoples experiences. That’s how we all grow.

With such a wide variety of projects and collaborators, what would you say your one, overarching mission is? What’s the main goal that undergirds all this work?

My overall mission is to empower others through storytelling and being a servant leader. How can we humanize a lot of the issues and day to day people go through. This is why I’m so focused on directing and producing. There is an art in telling a story and when done right it can impact millions.

With your background as a football player, what do you think the role of sports and athletics is in your mission and in uplifting people in general?

Teamwork makes the dream work. I’ve had a lot of success, had to restart from scratch and do it all over again, but a resilient attitude and unwavering belief in self really helped. Also the team I’ve built has and will allow me to succeed.

So you’re certainly happy where you’re at now, but are there any things you miss about football?

I miss my teammates, and honestly, I miss the structure. It’s nice having a routine. With that being said I’m creating my own reality and the platform of football has opened up countless doors. I’m still closely tied to the game and will continue to be, but this is an exciting time in my life and I’ll use that same mentality to take on anything else that comes ahead. Most people don’t realizing I only played 1 year of football. I was a basketball player in college and football was something I played when in high school and had success with and was also recruited for. Once people said you can’t play both or you’ve been done playing too long to have success, I took it as a challenge for myself more than anything. My career has changed but my mentality hasn’t.

As a multimedia enterprise, where do you see The Dale Moss Brand going next?

I see it creating a strong presence on both sides of the camera. As a model, host, and leader in the wellness industry, I’ll continue to gain a presence and on the other side of the lens I can really show my skill and gifts with directing and producing content, not only for myself but many brands. I’m already doing it with some of the top brands in the world and the next step is to put it in film format! Moss Martin Media has begun to scale and the next few years are going to be a lot of fun… work but fun.

What’s the role that personal style plays in The Dale Moss Brand?

Cool, clean, and powerful. This is my personality but also goes into my style choices. I’ll add flair and colors, but traditionally, I like something thats classic with a new spin. I love to dress up, but I’m also the type of guy who will throw on some nice jeans, a tee shirt, and some accessories and rock it just as hard as a suit. How you wear it is almost just as important as what you wear.

How do you maintain your workouts with your busy schedule? And how important is staying
fit to your career?

Early and often is my saying. I get up early, 5 or 5:30am, and knock out my stuff in the morning. From that point, I can pick and choose my pockets. Also I go hard in the gym [laughs]. As relaxed as I am all the time, that’s my time to let loose a little and I’m also still damn near as athletic as when I was playing in my peak. Health is everything, both mentally and physically. My body has and will always be my tool and taking a total body approach and incorporating it into your lifestyle is vital. Consistency above all else and finally find a great coach, or motivator to keep you going so you don’t burnout.

Any favorite workout tips?

Be consistent and always have goals you are working towards. If you don’t have a goal or idea of what you want, you will never achieve your health goals. Also invest in a coach or great trainer. You don’t have to work with them all the time, but it keeps you honest and also gives you someone to consult with. The best of the best in every industry have mentors, coaches, or consultants.
