Why Wearing a T-shirt Under a Button Up Actually Cools You Down

It may seem counterintuitive, but wearing a cotton T-shirt under your button up will actually keep you cooler this summer. A T-shirt helps create space between your body and your woven button up, allowing air to flow freely, which is nature’s way of cooling things down. As an added bonus, your undershirt will trap sweat, keeping from soaking into your button up, which can look sloppy and even cause pit-stains, which can become especially bad due to the chemicals in most antiperspirants (but not deodorants). In the name of service, we’ve rounded up a few woven button-up-and-T-shirt combos to help get you started. Try it now and thank us in July.

White Shirt/Gray Tee

Most men have noticed that when they wear a white T-shirt under a white woven shirt that the undershirt shows through a bit. That’s thanks to a quirk in the way white surfaces reflect light. Solve that problem by making a gray V-neck your base layer instead. Surprisingly, the gray shirt will remain invisible under the white woven, while the V-neck means your tee won’t show even if you decide to loosen up a bit and undo some buttons.

Printed Camp Collar/White Tee

This is a classic retro look, reminiscent of the best of 1950s style. Here, the bright white tee is part of the look. Tuck into some trousers and unbutton that woven for a nice clean, contrast.

White Print Shirt/Pink Tee

Again, here you’re looking to make the T-shirt part of your look. This pale, dusty pink will pop just a bit under a printed woven, but not so much that it overwhelms the shirt or the rest of your ensemble. It’s subtly expressive dressing at its best.
