Creature Comforts: The Art of Leisure
There’s something to be said for mastering the art of leisure. For all your upcoming trips, we scoured the nation and found the best spots for rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation.
Tinys & The Bar Upstairs
New York, NY
This quaint and yes, tiny three-story townhouse turned restaurant has an irresistibly charming décor. The building dates back to 1810 and keeps much of its whimsical charm, specifically its exposed brick walls, two-tone antique wallpaper, hand-made tiles, and original tin ceilings. However, it’s not all about the décor; the food is just as comforting. The menu reflects modern American cuisine with southern roots, and French influences. If you’re in town and want to stop for an inspiring lunch or a casual drink, this is the spot for you.
OURS Living
Los Angeles, CA
Have you ever stayed at a hotel and thought, “I wonder where they got that,” or maybe you stayed at an AIRBNB and loved its thoughtful furnishings and design. Well, if you stay with OURS, you’ll no longer have to wonder. Ricky Chan and Brendon Garner have released their new concept centered around the modern traveler’s experience. They’re creating a series of design-focused, short-term travel destinations where everything you see can be purchased. Their first two destinations are located in Downtown Los Angeles, but they’ve got plans to expand to select US cities, including NYC.
Happy Bones
New York, NY
Coffee culture is forever growing with no signs of slowing down. One of our favorite spots to get a hit of caffeine is Happy Bones. It’s a cozy, modern café that delivers a sense of distinct energy and creativity synonymous to New York City. The founders grew up in New Zealand, so they certainly know a thing or two about espresso, and they have an eye for talent. The café is always loaded with cool art from local artists, plus your fair share of novelty items (books, stickers, tees) and boutique-style finds.
Faena Hotel
Miami
Miami is presently experiencing an artistic and architectural renaissance. One of the must-see places to see in this sunbathed metropolis is the splendid Faena Hotel on Collins Avenue. It sits in the same location as the historic Saxony Hotel, a glamorous, star-studded enclave of the 50’s and 60’s. The new developers, Alan Faena and Len Blavatnik, have transformed it into a magnificent Art Deco emporium with 169 plush rooms & suites, and 12 uber-luxury penthouses. Highlights of Faena’s alluring interior include striking hardwood floors, extravagant red velvet touches and calming blue-tiled bathrooms. Other 5-star amenities include the hotel’s fire kitchen, Los Fuegos, their 3,000 sqft. Faena theater, and state-of-the-art spa, The Terra Santa Healing house. It’s no wonder they were awarded Forbes Travel Guide’s prestigious 5-Star award.
The Dwell,
Chattanooga TN
Built on a rich history, The Dwell hotel dates back to Civil War times, where it was first known as Fort James. In those times, it was a large stone fort that protected Chattanoogans during the war. Today, the space is still a place of hospitality, but a lively and colorful mid-century modern reinterpretation with just a touch of old Hollywood glam. While the hotel itself has changed, the foundation, spirit, and character is still the same. Located on the corner of 10th Street and Columbia, each room has it’s own unique décor where retro is completely reimagined with striking décor and quirky prints being the defining character for each room. Other highlights include their restaurant, Terra Mae (which translates to “mother earth”) that serves global cuisine right in the heart of Chattanooga.
