Couples Doing Things – Brooke Garner & Kendall Rumph

It’s often rare to have a Chinatown apartment that has an elevator that opens up into the apartment. Elevators are classed as a luxury in this city but Kendall and Brooke’s apartment is better than luxury, they have space that is surrounded by art, culture and personal identity. The apartment interior resembles a home with a suitable working space that caters to both their needs as well as accommodates the apartment’s other inhabitants, two cats called Rufus and Andrew. They both work in different fields that rarely connect but have found a common ground where they can combine creative projects while working together on Mor.

Brooke is a trained pattern maker, a skill that requires precision and drive as pattern makers are usually the last to leave the studio, hyper-focused on their relationship with draping and tailoring. Most recently, she’s been exploring the deconstruction and manipulation of vintage overcoats and linen fabrics. Kendall is a freelance animator, designer, photographer and life long skateboarder, always bringing that skateboarding spirit to his work/life balance: controlled but expressive, experimental but calculated and always striving for higher.

  • Tell us a little about how you both met?

K: We met at The Magician a lowkey bar located in the Lower East-Side and the conversation just flowed from there!

B: We spoke for what seemed five hours and 2 and 1/2 years later we still haven’t stopped.

  • What do you typically like to do for Valentine’s day?

K: We try to keep it simple. Making sure to appreciate each other and eating great food is what we value.

B: I think last year was my favorite Valentine’s day together wandering around Mexico City for a short getaway trip.

  • Do you do gifts or no gifts?

K+B: We will generally do something more often than giving something. So no, but also yes.

  • You both work in the creative field, does being in a relationship with another creative help with keeping your creative energy levels up?

B: One hundred percent, Kendall has helped me focus my creative energy.

K: Absolutely, it really helps to have a partner who gets it.

  • How do you keep work/home separate? Do you try to set boundaries to keep an even balance between both?

B: That’s definitely something we are still working on.

K: It’s hard as the work changes and grows but having a separate workspace does help.

  • If you are not working or working on a project, what do you typically like to do together for downtime?

K+B: Let’s put it under the umbrella of creative exploration. Reading, sketching, cooking, movies, live music, traveling, and even just getting out of the city. Giving and receiving inspiration from one another.
